Supported Configurations and System Requirements

Note: Spring Insight templates are no longer supported. The documentation is here for reference only.

Spring Insight Operations runs in Java 6, 7, and 8 environments and is supported by tc Server Standard Edition 2.1, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, and 3.0. Java 8 is supported as of version 1.9.2.SR6 of Spring Insight Operations. Both Insight Operations Dashboard and Agent support the configurations described in tc Server Supported Configurations and System Requirements. In addition, Insight Operations Agent can run in Tomcat 7 and 8, in JBoss 5.0.1, 5.1.0, 6.0.0 and 6.1.0, and in Oracle WebLogic Server 10.3.x and 12.1.1.

Spring Insight Operations performs best when you use the following browsers or IDE:

  • Google Chrome
  • Safari 5 or later
  • Mozilla Firefox 3.6 or later
  • Spring Tool Suite

Although Spring Insight will work with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and 8, its performance will not be optimal. If you cannot use a recommended browser, you should install the Google Chrome Frame plugin for Internet Explorer.

Storage Requirements

The Insight Dashboard uses Pivotal Gemfire and the Java SQL database H2 for persistence. Thus the Dashboard requires a storage configuration to which it can easily make random reads and writes—either a local disk or a SAN. Although Insight Operations does not require a large amount of storage space, the read and write times must be faster than that supported by NFS or other storage solutions used to cheaply configure storage for over-provisioned hosts.

Platforms where Insight Agent will run require multi-core processors.

Memory Requirements for tc Runtime Instances

Spring Insight might require increased memory for tc Runtime instances. You might need to increase either the maximum heap or the maximum PermGen size JVM options, or both. When using Insight with OpenJDK, a stack size of at least 256k (-Xss256k) should be used. In OpenJDK 1.6, the instrumentation API requires a larger stack size than with the Oracle JVM. Pivotal is working with Oracle to resolve this issue, but recommends larger stack sizes as a general rule until there is a permanent fix. Insight does not officially support the OpenJDK 1.6.

To increase the memory available to a tc Server instance:

Edit the CATALINA_BASE/bin/|bat file. CATALINA_BASE refers to the root directory of your instance, such as /opt/pivotal/pivotal-tc-server-standard-x.x.x.RELEASE/insight-instance. The comments in the file include examples of setting the JVM options.
